The new ABRSM Piano Syllabus (2027–2028) has now been released. Students currently at Grades 1–8 will be advised individually on which syllabus is most suitable for them.

The new syllabus may be used from 1 January 2027. However, the current 2025–2026 syllabus remains valid until 31 December 2027, giving students and teachers a full year of overlap and flexibility.

Students who are already preparing for an exam should continue with their current repertoire unless advised otherwise. Please note that all exam pieces must be selected from the same syllabus and cannot be mixed between syllabus periods.

Gentle reminder: preparing for a music exam involves much more than learning the exam pieces. Students must also prepare scales, arpeggios, sight-reading and aural tests. In addition, they are expected to continue learning and playing a broad range of repertoire alongside their exam materials.

For your child's long-term musical development, we do not teach just exam pieces in isolation. The wider repertoire studied in lessons helps develop technique, reading skills, musical understanding and overall musicianship.

Consistent practice, good attendance and steady progress over many months are key to success. Students who demonstrate these habits will generally benefit from staying on their current syllabus and taking their exam as planned.
